If you dare to try to drain an enemy’s soul BEFORE they are at death’s door, your impudence will be rewarded with an unblockable counterattack – you must dodge BEFORE the meter in order to avoid it. It takes so long to perform special attacks that the targeted enemy will move out of range or attack you instead. That’s right: the game’s apparent equalizer between you and hordes of enemies reappearing, in a nutshell, doesn’t. While I lingered on draining souls and performing special attacks, NPCs were running around doing nothing. My initial thought was that they would be unnecessary, as such characters often are, and I wasn’t disappointed (or maybe I was, depending on your take on friendly AI in video games). Sometimes the game sees fit to give you a “support character”. Because the combat mechanic is so broken, it’s too easy to find yourself in a situation where the primary enemy is only vulnerable to a specific secondary weapon, but no drone spawns for you to complete the special meter. This counter is needed to use secondary weapons you take from defeated enemies. You can combine strong and weak attacks, but you can do almost as much damage by simply crushing one or the other.Īnother complication is the ability to “drain souls” from weakened enemies, which fills your special meter. The fight doesn’t go very well either, as jumping in the air will cause ridiculous slow-motion for no sufficiently explained reason.

The game is desperately picky about the weapon that will damage different enemies, and the incredibly clunky and lengthy menu system used to switch between and upgrade the myriad of secondary weapons to collect further detracts from the combat experience. The combat mechanic, heart and soul of a hack and slash title, sucks. Medusa was horrified at how poor the graphics were when she first came out onscreen. The game requires you to retread in familiar ground by giving you multiple pretexts to go to an area, whether it is to gather herbs, find your sister, or quite simply to go and kill monsters.

The player must complete “quests”, which follow a regular formula: go here, wait for enemies to appear, mull successive waves and start over. The player takes on the role of Perseus, the protagonist of the film (shock horror), and the game opens on his native island. Question: What is the use of a film linked to a film to which there is no link? Answer: None. Due to the shutdown of Brash – a studio infamous for its bad related games – By the end of 2008, CotT was stuck in development hell long enough to miss the launch of its cinematic counterpart.

The movie was a fairly enjoyable (albeit shallow) way to spend a rainy afternoon, but watching the paint dry would be nicer than this game. The game is based on the movie of the same name which was released this year, which in turn is freely based on the tale of Perseus from Greek mythology.
